Frequently Asked Questions
WHERE DO ALL THE QUESTIONS COME FROM?
WHAT IS THE KITE STEM CHALLENGE?
A STEM competition open to every student (K-12) and school in the Lake Washington School District. Students answer STEM questions using this app; each answer counts as an entry in a drawing to be held when the competition is over.

- 1st Place High School $10,000
- 2nd Place High School $5,000
- 3rd Place High School $3,000
- 1st Place Middle School $6,000

HOW DO SCHOOLS WIN PRIZES?
A drawing will be held on May 14 to determine the winning schools. Entries in this drawing will be created each time a student answers a question in the app:
- 1 entry = for trying (even if the answer is incorrect)
- 5 entries= correct response
- 15 entries = a correct response submitted in a Kirkland park(think Pokemon Go!)
ARE THERE PRIZES FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS?
Individual prizes will be awarded to high performing students. Prizes include: Pacific Science Center memberships, IMAX tickets, and Google swag. These will be awarded each week for students who opt-in by providing their contact info. Winners will be notified by email and prizes can be picked up at the Awards Ceremony at the Kirkland Google Campus on May 23.
WHO IS SPONSORING THE KITE STEM CHALLENGE?
Google is the sole financial sponsor of the Challenge, contributing all the awards money as well as covering production costs. The Kirkland Parks Foundation is the other main sponsor. Partner organizations include Lake Washington School District, Pacific Science Center, Lake Washington Schools Foundation, City of Kirkland, Brilliant.org, Eastside Audubon, and KiwiCo.
HOW LONG DOES THE CHALLENGE LAST?
The KITE STEM Challenge is open from April 23 – May 13, 2018.
HOW CAN I ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION IN MY SCHOOL?
There are many ways! Reach out to us at email@example.com to get the free Action Plan for your school.
AM I BEING TRACKED BY THIS APP?
There is no tracking of individuals by this app. Because students get more entries when they are competing inside a Kirkland park, the app checks the GPS coordinates of the device to see if it matches any of the Kirkland parks. When an answer to a question is submitted from within a Kirkland park, that is captured along with the answer.
WHY IS GOOGLE INVOLVED?
Google likes being involved in the community surrounding it’s Kirkland campus, as well as encouraging STEM education in schools. “This challenge offers students in the Lake Washington School District a fantastic opportunity to test their STEM knowledge and get outside at the same time,” said Darcy Nothnagle, Google’s head of external affairs for the northwest region. “We hope this challenge will interest students who might not normally get involved with STEM activities and show them that STEM is for everyone.”
